Lighting design is one of the most important, collaborative and creative contributions in the making of a dance concert. Last July, David Goodman-Edberg worked with Abby Ellison on her achingly beautiful work "Beneath the Clouds, Above the Rest", and with Brennen Renteria on his wildly enchanting "When In Doubt". We asked him to choose two photos from each work, and tell us whatever he wanted about his thoughts, his process and his inspiration. His insights offer an incredibly valuable look into the well-lit, but still mysterious world of Lighting Design.
Visceral Dance Chicago kicked off their Fall Engagement series with a performance at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie this weekend, and DancerMusic's Kristi Licera was in the audience to capture what you missed:
Chicago Dance Crash is a company as unique as its artists, with a history of bending the rules of concert dance. In its 15th anniversary season, this band of professional misfits took on the task of creating an original full length production, 'The Bricklayers of Oz' - currently in the running for 'Most Inventive New Work' in Dance Magazine's Readers' Choice Awards 2017. Teague also performs with harpist Faye Seeman in her composition Fayed to Blue.
Visceral Dance was founded just four years ago, in 2013, but they've already established a remarkable record for artistic imagination. This Saturday, September 16 Visceral opens their Fall Engagement at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts with a program that introduces Danielle Agami's "Pick a Seat" and works from Marguerite Donlon, Mark Godden and Artistic Director Nick Pupillo.
At Dance For Life this Saturday, August19, one of the more intriguing performances will be of In the Meantime. The collaborators describe the work as "a celebration of our distinct cultures and a recognition of our common impulses and the universal desire to make rhythm". Here, CHRP's Lane Alexander gives us an inside look at two of the photos from the work ...
The weekend is nearly upon us, which means many of Chicago's dance professionals are gearing up for Dance for Life 2017 - a one-night only dance benefit concert at The Auditorium Theater. One company taking the stage this Saturday night is none other than Visceral Dance Chicago, who will close the series of company performances with 'Ruff Celts', choreographed by Marguerite Donlon.
Each August, the Chicago dance community packs the city's Auditorium Theatre for Dance For Life. For a special look ahead, DancerMusic reached out to each of the Partner Dance Companies that perform each year at Dance For Life. Each of them has selected a photo from their performance, and given us some insight into what they will be performing.
